Manual Lymphatic Drainage
Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a specialised massage technique that helps encourage the natural movement of lymph fluid throughout the body. By using gentle, rhythmic, and precise techniques, MLD can be a really effective way to help you manage conditions like lymphoedema, post-surgical swelling, post cancer treatment and chronic inflammation. The aim of MLD is to move fluid from the swollen area into a place where the lymphatic system is working normally.
- Highly effective treatment
- Flexible appointments based on individual needs
- Trained specialist Therapists
Your treatment plan is personalised based on your needs, the type of MLD required, and the extent of swelling. The number of sessions will vary and will be determined by your Therapist after assessing your condition.

Why Choose
goPhysio
What a surprise to receive a letter from UHS informing me that their Manual Lymphatic Drainage clinic had closed and that if I had problems with my Lymphedema to visit my GP. Sadly, my GP knew nothing about Lymphedema and told me I was on my own. Having heard that goPhysio had a clinician (Sophie) who was trained in MLD therapy I contacted them for advice and have been going there since late November 2024. What a difference! After five weekly therapy visits there was a noticeable reduction in the size of both legs and feet. My walking has improved and my legs and feet are less heavy. My visits to goPhysio are now just once or twice a month. Looking forward to the warmer days and more outdoor walking. I would highly recommend visiting goPhysio and talking with Sophie about MLD therapy.

Who MLD Can Help
Lymphoedema is caused by a problem with the lymphatic system, a network of vessels and glands spread throughout the body. The main functions of the lymphatic system are helping fight infection and draining excess fluid from tissues.
MLD is a really effective treatment for the following conditions:
- Primary lymphoedema – caused by faulty genes that affect the development of the lymphatic system
- Secondary lymphoedema – caused by damage to the lymphatic system or problems with the movement and drainage of fluid in the lymphatic system, such as;
- After cancer treatment
- Following an infection or injury
- Inflammation of the limb, or long term reduced movement
Frequently Asked Questions
There have been many changes with the way health insurance companies cover physiotherapy recently. Subsequently, we require all patients to pay for their physiotherapy appointements up front per appointment. We will provide you with a printed receipt which includes your Physiotherapist’s HCPC number, which you can then provide to your individual insurance company. Depending on your individual policy, you may be able to reclaim some or all of your fees. Policies and cover varies widely now and we are unable to accept any responsibility for the amount you may be able to recaim from your insurance company. You will be responsible for any shortfall.
If you are looking to claim back your fees through your health insurance company, please do let us know, as not all our Clinicains are recognised by health insurance.
We understand that sometimes things come up, however we would appreciate as much notice as possible if you are unable to attend your appointment. We just ask that you give us a minimum of 24 hrs notice of any changes to your appointment so that we can re-allocate the appointment. Less than 24 hours notice will result in a charge. Appointment slots are very valuable and without adequate notice that appointment can’t be used for another patient. We send out both text message & email appointment reminders to help you remember your appointment time.
Please just give us a call or drop us an email if you’d like to change your appointment.
