Neck Pain: Causes & Effective Treatment Options – goPhysio

More about neck pain

Neck pain is one of the most common problems we see in clinic. It’s rarely down to one single cause, it’s usually a mix of posture, muscle control and how you’ve been using your neck day to day. We always start with a full assessment, so we can identify exactly what’s driving your symptoms and build the right plan to resolve them. Here are some of the most common causes of neck pain we see at goPhysio:

  • Sustained postures held for long periods, such as reading, screen time or sleeping
  • Overuse or repetitive strain from the same activity
  • Poor muscle control, leading to fatigue and overuse of surrounding muscles
  • Poor workstation set-up or working practices
  • Traumatic injury, such as whiplash
  • Referred pain linked to headaches or tension in the head and jaw
  • Stress and tension, which can increase muscle tightness and sensitivity

Neck pain can feel worrying, particularly if movement is restricted or it’s linked to headaches, but that doesn’t automatically mean something is seriously wrong. Part of our role is helping you understand exactly what’s going on, clearly and confidently. See NHS guidance on neck pain and stiff neck for further reading. Clinically reviewed by Paul Baker MCSP, Co-founder & Clinical Director at goPhysio.

Made an appointment with goPhysio as I had been having neck and shoulder pain. The Physio was warm, friendly and personable and seemed to get to the root of my problem. She did a number of exercises with me and then massaged the affected area. Subsequent appointment made quickly for acupuncture which has definitely relieved the symptoms. I would like to highly recommend.

Can physiotherapy help my neck pain?

Yes โ€“ physiotherapy is one of the most effective ways to treat neck pain. We start with a full assessment to understand exactly what’s driving your symptoms, then build a plan around it. Your treatment may include:

  • Hands-on treatment to reduce stiffness and improve mobility Massage and acupuncture to ease muscle spasm, pain and tension headaches
  • Advice on your sleeping position and workstation set-up
  • Home exercises to strengthen your neck muscles and help prevent it coming back

The goal throughout: ease your pain, restore movement, and stop your neck pain coming back.

Not usually. Most neck pain is diagnosed through a thorough clinical assessment of your movement, posture and history. We’ll only recommend a scan if your assessment suggests it’s genuinely needed.
Many cases, especially those linked to posture or muscle tension, improve within a few weeks with the right treatment and advice. Whiplash or more persistent cases can take longer, which is why an accurate diagnosis matters.
Yes โ€“ tension in the neck and upper back is one of the most common causes of headaches, known as cervicogenic headaches. Treating the neck often resolves the headache too, which is why we always check both together.
In most cases, yes โ€“ gentle movement and specific exercises usually help rather than hinder recovery. Your physiotherapist will guide you on which movements to avoid and how to stay active safely.
Simple changes to your workstation set-up, regular movement breaks, and posture awareness can make a big difference. We’ll assess your set-up and give you specific, practical advice as part of your treatment.
If your pain hasn’t started improving within a week or two, keeps returning, or is affecting your sleep or daily activities, it’s worth getting it assessed. Seek help sooner if you notice numbness, weakness, or pain spreading down your arm or any dizziness, blurred or double vision.
