Physio or Chiro? A question we get asked so often! If youโre experiencing pain from day to day activities, have an injury that needs addressing, or are looking to optimise the health of your muscles and joints, you may be wondering whether you should see a physiotherapist or a chiropractor. This is a common question, and people often want to know the advantages and limitations of each speciality. It is important to understand that many physiotherapists and chiropractors work alongside each other, as they both share the common goal of helping people move and feel better.
One of our newest team members, Hannah, has a unique insight into this question, as prior to becoming a Physiotherapist she trained to be a Chiropractor. In todayโs blog, she shares her thoughts on the difference (and similarities) between Physio and Chiropractic.
On the surface, physiotherapists and chiropractors can seem very similar. Both are registered and regulated professionals in musculoskeletal health, and they have a lot of overlapping skills and approaches towards care. Whilst both can offer a wide range of benefits, there are certain scenarios in which you may wish to choose a physiotherapist or a chiropractor.
One of the main differences between physiotherapists and chiropractors is to do with the spine. A chiropractor may focus more on the diagnosis and treatment of neck and back conditions, and use manual techniques such as spinal manipulation and mobilisation to return the spine to its optimal function. A physiotherapist may focus more on the function and movement patterns of specific body regions, such as the shoulder, low back, hip, or knee. A physiotherapist will aim to restore optimum movement by addressing muscle imbalances and joint restrictions, which may be caused due to injuries, repetitive strain or surgeries. This can be done through a combination of manual treatments such as massage and mobilisation, and specific, targeted rehabilitation exercises.
Both specialities have overlapping qualities, including:
- Using manual therapies to help relieve pain, tension or stiffness.
- Addressing similar problem areas of the musculoskeletal system, such as low back pain, leg pains or muscle imbalances.
- Advise on stretches and exercises that can enhance and prolong the benefits of each treatment.
The musculoskeletal system of each person is unique, and some people gain much more benefit from one type of professional over another. The best way to decide which professional to seek help from is to make an appointment with a physiotherapist or chiropractor for a full assessment of your condition. In some instances, physiotherapists and chiropractors will recommend each otherโs expertise to support your recovery and optimise your musculoskeletal health.
