Overuse Injuries
What Is An Overuse Injury?
An overuse injury is normally a long standing or chronic injury that gradually occurs over a period of time, rather than a sudden, acute traumatic injury. Repetitive minor or micro trauma to a muscle, joint, ligament or tendon such as a tendinopathy or stress fracture, are just a couple of examples of overuse injuries.
Overuse injuries occur due to performing repetitive sustained tasks at work, home or during exercise without adequate rest and recovery time. Itโs based on the training principle that the body will adapt to specific demands you place upon it. However, if those demands are excessive and the body can’t cope, injuries can happen. This often occurs when we take up a new hobby, sport or activity or increase training levels/load for an event.
They can go unnoticed for a long time and depending on the affected tissue or body part will depend on how it will feel. Common symptoms include:
- Pain on warm-up and then returns towards end or after activity
- Pinching or sharp pain on specific movements
- An persistent dull ache

How We Can Help
During you assessment the therapist will identify all the potential causes to your overuse injury which can be broadly classified into; Intrinsic: Within your body i.e. muscle strength, length, biomechanics, joint mobility, posture etc. or Extrinsic: External to your body i.e. training error, terrain, equipment etc.
Through a thorough assessment and listening to your injury story, our Clinicians will identify the act cause or combination of cause of your injury. Treatment success is all about raising your tissue load capacity above what you need to be able to do, from 5km runs to marathons and weekend walks to heavy gym sessions, we tailor it to whatever you want. In addition to treatments to ease your pain and help your injury recover, weโll ensure you leave with a modified exercise programme to maintain the benefits and prevent recurrence.
Frequently Asked Questions
There have been many changes with the way health insurance companies cover physiotherapy recently. Subsequently, we require all patients to pay for their physiotherapy appointements up front per appointment. We will provide you with a printed receipt which includes your Physiotherapistโs HCPC number, which you can then provide to your individual insurance company. Depending on your individual policy, you may be able to reclaim some or all of your fees. Policies and cover varies widely now and we are unable to accept any responsibility for the amount you may be able to recaim from your insurance company. You will be responsible for any shortfall.
If you are looking to claim back your fees through your health insurance company, please do let us know, as not all our Clinicains are recognised by health insurance.
We understand that sometimes things come up, however we would appreciate as much notice as possible if you are unable to attend your appointment. We just ask that you give us a minimum of 24 hrs notice of any changes to your appointment so that we can re-allocate the appointment. Less than 24 hours notice will result in a charge. Appointment slots are very valuable and without adequate notice that appointment canโt be used for another patient. We send out both text message & email appointment reminders to help you remember your appointment time.
Please just give us a call or drop us an email if youโd like to change your appointment.

As a company they are very professional and provide a very good level of service to include efficiency and courtesy and are always consistent in their approach. This very much includes the admin /reception team whom are the first people you make contact with. My Physio has excellent knowledge and has assisted me with sound advice and ongoing exercise regimes which are achievable and realistic. This has supported me well in between appointments. Although always busy I am normally able to see Roz at a mutually convenient time. Thank you to all the team
