Every year on 8th September, we celebrate World Physiotherapy Day – a chance to shine a light on the incredible role physiotherapy plays in keeping people healthy and active. This year’s theme is Healthy Ageing, a topic that’s more relevant than ever.
Why healthy ageing matters
The world’s population is ageing faster than at any time in history.
- In 2019, there were 1 billion people aged 60+ years.
- By 2030, this will rise to 1.4 billion.
- By 2050, the number will reach a staggering 2.1 billion.
- The number of people aged 80 years or older is expected to triple by 2050, reaching 426 million.
(World Health Organisation, Ageing and Health, October 2024)
With so many people living longer, the focus is shifting from just “adding years to life” to adding life to years. That’s where healthy ageing comes in.
What is healthy ageing?
According to the World Health Organisation, healthy ageing means:
- Staying active
- Maintaining relationships
- Continuing to do the things you value as you grow older
Supportive environments that promote physical and mental wellbeing are key to making this possible.
What promotes healthy ageing?
While ageing is a natural process, the way we age is shaped by the choices we make and the support we have throughout life. Some of the most effective ways to promote healthy ageing include:
- Staying active – moving as much as your own individual circumstances allow
- Challenging your balance regularly
- Keeping socially connected
- Maintaining mobility in your joints and muscles
- Eating well to fuel body and mind
The life course approach to ageing
Healthy ageing isn’t something that starts at 60 – it’s built across your whole life. The risk of age-related conditions like dementia and frailty can be influenced by habits and activity at every stage:
- Early life – Regular activity in childhood builds strong bones, muscles, and cardiovascular health.
- Young adulthood – Staying active helps protect against obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and even supports brain health later in life.
- Midlife – Physical activity reduces the risk of chronic illness, supports mental wellbeing, and helps maintain independence into older age.
It’s never too early, or too late, to take steps towards healthy ageing.
