A Million Reasons to Move: Celebrating Hiltingbury Junior parkrun

There was a wonderful sense of energy at Hiltingbury Recreation Ground this morning.
Paul and I joined hundreds of children, parents, family members, supporters and volunteers enjoying the beautiful June sunshine at Hiltingbury Recreation Ground junior parkrun. It was fantastic to watch so many young people enthusiastically take on the 2km course – some racing towards a personal best, others jogging, walking or simply enjoying being active with their friends and families.
goPhysio was proud to help contribute towards the initial setup costs for this new local event, so it was particularly special to see it flourishing just a few weeks after launching.
A brilliant start for Hiltingbury junior parkrun
Hiltingbury junior parkrun is a free, friendly weekly 2km event for children aged four to 14. It takes place at Hiltingbury Recreation Ground in Chandler’s Ford every Sunday morning at 9am.
It is already attracting around 150 young runners each week. Before this morning’s event was added to the figures, the first four official runs had recorded:
- 582 completed 2km runs
- 308 different young participants
- 105 personal bests
- 79 different volunteers supporting the event [1]
Those numbers are impressive, but they tell only part of the story.
Standing at the recreation ground this morning, what struck us most was the atmosphere: children encouraging one another, proud parents cheering, volunteers making everyone feel welcome and a whole community starting its Sunday outdoors and on the move.
Part of parkrun’s one-millionth event weekend
This was also a historic weekend for the wider parkrun community.
Across Saturday 13 and Sunday 14 June 2026, parkrun delivered its one-millionth event worldwide – nearly 22 years after its first event was held at Bushy Park in London in October 2004 with just 13 runners and five volunteers.
Since then, participants have crossed parkrun finish lines more than 138 million times, while an extraordinary 16 million instances of volunteering have been recorded. [2]
What began as one small, informal running event has developed into a global movement built around three wonderfully simple things: being outdoors, being active and being social.
Hiltingbury junior parkrun is now part of that story.
Why junior parkrun is so valuable for children
At goPhysio, we believe movement should be enjoyable, accessible and part of everyday life. Junior parkrun embodies this perfectly.
It gives children an opportunity to develop their fitness, movement skills and confidence without needing to join a competitive sports team or reach a particular standard. There is no expectation that children must be fast. They can run, jog or walk and enjoy progressing at their own pace.
Regular activities such as running can contribute towards cardiovascular fitness while also helping children develop strong muscles and bones. The NHS recommends that children and young people aged five to 18 average at least 60 minutes of moderate or vigorous physical activity each day across the week. [3]
Just as importantly, junior parkrun helps children associate movement with fun, friendship and achievement rather than pressure. A national survey of junior parkrun families found that:
- 85% of parents and carers felt junior parkrun had positively affected their child’s self-esteem
- two in three reported improvements in their child’s physical activity levels and enjoyment of being active
- 65% of children said they felt proud of themselves
- 60% of families felt more connected to their community
- 96% planned to continue attending junior parkrun [4]
These benefits can reach far beyond the 2km course. More than half of the parents surveyed said their children had also started walking, jogging or running outside junior parkrun, while others had progressed to a 5km parkrun or joined a school sports club.
More than a run

One of the strengths of parkrun is that everyone can be involved.
Some children run. Some walk. Parents, grandparents and friends offer encouragement. Volunteers lead the warm-up, marshal the course, record times, scan barcodes and make sure every child is safely supported from the start to the finish.
That combination of movement, fresh air, volunteering and social connection creates something much bigger than a weekly run. It gives families a regular reason to spend time outdoors together and helps children feel that they belong to their local community.
It can also build valuable life skills: perseverance, independence, managing disappointment, celebrating progress and supporting other people’s achievements.
Supporting healthier and happier local communities
Helping people stay active throughout life is central to everything we do at goPhysio. Our purpose is to add life to people’s years, and encouraging positive experiences of movement during childhood is an important part of that.
Not every child will enjoy traditional competitive sport. Initiatives such as junior parkrun offer a welcoming alternative where individual progress matters more than winning and children can discover their own enjoyment of being active.
We are incredibly proud to have played a small part in helping Hiltingbury junior parkrun get started. The real credit belongs to the dedicated volunteers who make it happen each week and to every child and family who turns up and takes part.
Seeing the recreation ground filled with movement, smiles and encouragement on a sunny Sunday morning showed exactly why community activities like this matter.
