In the current climate, we are constantly having to prove what we do is worth it. We have to justify spending money, spending time and get positive results & fast!
At goPhysio, we know what we are doing works and so do the thousands of satisfied patients we have seen over the past decade. However, now you don’t have to just take our word for it! The results of some new research have just been published by Physio First (the organisation of chartered physiotherapists in private practice).
Physio First have carried out a number of ‘snap shot surveys’ in association with the University of Brighton. These surveys were conducted in 2009/10 over 2 month periods in private physiotherapy practices across the UK and goPhysio were delighted to be involved. Physio First collected various data in relation to some common conditions that physio’s regularly treat. These conditions included low back pain, whiplash, shoulder pain & knee pain.
Here are some of the key results that we found interesting
It was great to read that for those suffering with low back, shoulder or knee pain, 67% exceeded, fully or significantly achieved their goals. 77% of those with whiplash achieved their goals. These are really positive results; only a very small % of patients did not manage to achieve their goals through physiotherapy, illustrating that for most people, physiotherapy works!
For those suffering with low back pain and knee pain, the average ‘pain score’ before physiotherapy was 5 (mild/moderate severity) and this was reduced to 2 (very low severity) after physiotherapy. 91% of those surveyed only required 6 treatments or less. This shows how cost effective physio can be. So many people suffer in silence, particularly with ongoing back pain, thinking that they might need lots of expensive treatment to get them better. This isn’t always the case.
Personally, the most interesting result for me was that for all conditions there was a positive relationship between the injury & start of treatment and the number of treatments needed. So, the quicker physio was started, the less treatments were required. So, if you get an injury, don’t delay. Seeing a physio quickly can help you avoid a lengthy recovery and more importantly keep you at work and doing all the things you enjoy.
